Turkey – Istanbul: Entrance Fee to Hagia Sophia for Foreign Tourists Set at 25 Euros – New Admission Prices for the Historical Heritage
As part of the new regulation by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the entry fee for foreign tourists to the Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya-i Kebir Camii Şerifi) has been set at 25 euros. Turkish citizens, visiting the mosque for religious reasons, are exempt from this fee. Additionally, the entrances and security measures have been reorganized to reduce and regulate the influx of visitors.
UTKAN NEWS (Vienna) – Turkish citizens can still enter the Hagia Sophia for free through the prayer entrance for religious services. However, tourists wishing to visit the gallery level from January 15, 2024, onwards will have to pay an entrance fee.
Since January 15, the Hagia Sophia has introduced a new policy. Foreign tourists wanting to visit the mosque for cultural purposes are now required to pay an entry fee of 25 euros. This policy does not affect Turkish citizens visiting the mosque for religious reasons. A fee of 25 euros per person is charged for tourists to access the gallery level.
For the admission of foreign tourists to the museum, a new ticket booth and entrance point have been established near the III. Ahmet Fountain. Controlled access will be through the tunnel and ramp under the minaret of Sultan Beyazıt II on the south side of the historic mosque. Visitors are taken to the gallery level and exit the building via the ramp in the northeast direction. Headphones and scarves are also being sold at the ticket counters.
Hagia Sophia has become chargeable for tourist visits.
- Admission price: 850 TL (25 euros)
- Audioguide headphones: 100 TL (3 euros)
- Headscarf: 30 TL (1 euro)
According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the changes made in the Hagia Sophia ensure that religious services and cultural visits are clearly separated. As part of restoration and conservation efforts, the marble claddings and wooden railings of the gallery level have been cleaned and protected. Additionally, security cameras and emergency announcement systems have been installed.
Tourists can receive headphones through a QR code system, offering information in 23 different languages. Thanks to the new regulations, visits to the Hagia Sophia can be conducted without disrupting the atmosphere of the religious services. The fee of 25 euros set for the entrance of foreign tourists will be an important source for the protection and maintenance of the mosque.
